How effective are sound absorbing panels at reducing office noise levels?

For anyone that works in an office environment, background noise is always an issue. When multiple people sit and work in close quarters, all completing their own specific tasks, noise is an inevitable side effect. It can be something as small as the beeping of a computer or phone, or someone tapping their pencil on the desk or something as significant as loud talkers, constant phone calls or construction sounds. Noise, while unavoidable, is also a proven deterrent to productivity. Numerous studies have shown that excessive noise can not only disrupt concentration and make employees less productive, but it can also contribute to anxiety, moodiness, irritation and general low morale.

In order to counter this issue, many offices, especially in sectors like sales or call centres, that involve a lot of talking, have turned to soundproofing offices in a bid to reduce background noise and help employees concentrate better. There are various methods to soundproof a space, and most of them which are effective are quite expensive and may require the space to be cleared for a few days or even weeks. This is why the use of sound absorption panels has risen among those wanting to reduce noise in the office.

What are sound absorbing panels?

Sound absorbing panels are panels made from materials that can dampen and deaden soundwaves in the space, therefore reducing the total amount of noise. These panels mainly stop noise from bouncing off the walls and reverberating or echoing. This technique is effective in cutting down background noise and keeping the room quieter. Sound absorbing panels are made from certain materials that work to soundproof a space. Depending upon the cost, the utility, and the space which is being soundproofed, the materials used will differ considerably.

What are materials used in sound absorbing panels?

  • One of the most common materials used in sound absorption is fabric with EcoPro fibre cement boards. The sound absorbing effects are easily observable in everyday life by something like covering a speaker with a cloth and noting the reduction in volume. Fabric is also quite cheap and available in variety of colours, with EcoPro fibre cement boards you can enhance the visual appearance by adding customized and theme-based boards. You can choose a printed, single color or designer boards which comes in various shapes and colors. You can add light or a frame to add more emphasis
  • And the 2nd best and most effective material used for sound absorption is foam with Ecopro fibre cement boards. Since foam is lightweight, cheap and easy to install, it is a favourite among all. Furthermore, foam blocks out background noise more effectively than either wood or fabric

Are sound absorbing panels effective?

There are a lot of methods that can be used to soundproof a space. These methods all differ in cost and convenience as well as utility. Various materials such as rubber, vinyl, mass loaded drywall, soundproof sheetrock, etc. can be used in various ways to reduce sound in a room. The more effective a method or material is, the more expensive it is. This is why the most efficient way to soundproof a space should be decided only after looking at the utility. For instance, a music studio would require heavy-duty soundproofing to keep the noise blocked, while a normal household or office would be soundproofed even with medium-efficiency materials.

In an office, most noise is low-decibel, emerging from everyday actions. There isn’t much heavy mechanical or musical noise. This is why sound absorption panels are a great choice for offices. These panels are reasonably good at reducing mid and high-frequency sound waves. They are not very effective at insulating low-frequency sound waves, and therefore cannot entirely block out all noise. However, they can significantly reduce overall noise to a sufficient degree in order to improve the office experience of employees.

According to some studies on average, sound absorption panels can reduce noise levels upto 15 decibels, which is quite significant when you take into consideration that the average noise levels in an office are about 60 decibels high, depending on the type of work done. This shows that these panels are reasonably good at muffling excess background noise, and allowing for better concentration. That, coupled with the affordability and ease of installation of these panels, makes them the perfect choice for offices.

4 Architectural Shifts in Facade Designs

When you imagine an IT park, you would picturise those reflective tall buildings wrapped entirely in glass reflecting the rays of the sun. The original concrete structure is expertly hidden behind this facade. Despite their climatic limitations and heating issues, these materials have long dominated the architectural scene symbolizing the quintessential office space. However, advances in technology are now enabling a plethora of approaches to facade design and construction. Some of these options are particularly beneficial for the parts of the world that suffer from excessive heat and cold. From timber & Fibre cement to shape shifting tiles and curved glass – modern facade technology has had architects spoilt for choice. We bring you, 4 of those trends in facade design.

 4 Trends in Facade Designs

Weathering steel cladding or CORTEN

Often referred to as “CORTEN” or “COR-TEN” signifying the company that owns the trademark to weathering steel, this mesmerizing rust-colored metal is known for its peculiar oxidized patina appearance. It is an alloy that was developed to eliminate the need for painting and form a stable rust-like appearance after several years’ exposure to weather. It is originally grey in color but eventually turns orange and then deep brown after months of oxidization. In this process, protective layers develop on the material’s surface. These layers contribute to performance and create the metal’s architectural aesthetic.

However, Weathering steel does not come without its own set of challenges. For one, It is sensitive to humid subtropical climates, and in such environments, it is possible that the protective patina may not stabilize but instead continue to corrode. Also, Weathering steel is not rustproof in itself. If water is allowed to accumulate in pockets, those areas will experience higher corrosion rates. Hence, it is not suitable in marine or coastal environments.

Kinetic Facade

A kinetic facade is one that changes dynamically rather than being static or fixed. This enables the movement of the building’s surface. The architect Buckminster Fuller calls this the ‘skin-like articulation’ effect and is an extension of the idea that a building’s envelope is an active system rather than just a container. Elements that form this facade can be programmed to move according to the climate such as to block sun rays from directly hitting the floor. This improves energy efficiency or reduces solar heat, or may even simply act as an art installation.

The Al Bahr Towers in Abu Dhabi is an example of a kinetic facade made of umbrella-like panels that open and close in response to the sun’s movement through the day, to achieve optimal shading and light entering the building. Although this is a great idea for creating stunning impact and attracting an iconic status, it of course comes with a whopping price tag!

Curved glass

Technological advances in glass have taken curved glass fabrication to different levels of complexity and performance in the last few years and continue to drive into new frontiers. Curved glass gives architects and designers more freedom to create innovative facades where straightness, corners, and edges can be replaced with soft curves. The curved glass allows transparent views on the corner of a building, without the visually disturbing frames. Costs for curved glass are almost thrice that of flat glass – making it less appealing to conservative investors.

Fibre Cement Sheets

Fibre cement sheet is formed by extracting the best qualities from its parent elements viz cement and Fibre and then combining them in perfect proportion to form a material that has the best of both worlds. While it is strong and sturdy like concrete, it is light and flexible like Fibre. While it has the aesthetics of timber, it is resistant to molds, fire, and termites.

Fibre cement allows us to clad walls in a light, non-combustible, and weather-resistant way, generating facades with different textures, colors, and tones. These sheets can also be used as an application of Kinetic Facades as they are easily manageable. Doubling up as sound absorbing panels, they exhibit good acoustical qualities by absorbing ambient noise. They are perforable and can act as ventilated facades when installed with a certain separation between the rear wall. Despite these advantages, Fibre cement sheets remain modest and meek, and greatly affordable, unlike their flashier counterparts.

Fibre cement facades can be installed in random arrangements of panels to generate variations in their orientations. You may opt for a rustic board-and-batten look or a cleaner look with simple minimalist lines. In the Shiplap Siding pattern, they appear to be butted right up against one another, creating a clean, smooth surface, which is common among contemporary homes. The art of installing Fibre cement facades is only limited by the expertise & skills of the architect.

When it comes to Fibre cement claddings, EcoPro is one of the biggest names in the game in India, almost synonymous with fiber cement sheets. The versatility of FIbre cement sheets means that their applications range from external wall cladding and roofing to mezzanine flooring and  false ceiling for hall. Use Wall Claddings to Add Interest to your Wet Areas

Is a lack of texture and dimension making your bathroom look ‘dry’ in an unpleasant way? Wet area cladding could be your solution.

Wet areas are the rooms or spaces containing sanitary fixtures and appliances – including bathrooms and en suites, toilets, laundries, kitchens, entries, and even garages. They are subject to high levels of moisture from direct wetting, high humidity levels, and condensation. Poor wet area design or installation can increase the risk of slips & slides and can raise other safety hazards. Design and building faults can also lead to damage in building structure or finishes – such as rot in framing, deterioration/disintegration of linings, flooring & cabinetry, and peeling paint. With good design, detailing, and installation of waterproof layers and impervious finishes, wet areas can be made durable, healthy, safe, and comfortable. If renovating or rebuilding the wet areas in your home is on the list this summer, it’s time you considered Fibre cement internal wall cladding as your option.

What is interior wall cladding?

Cladding is a process of layering one material over another. Wall cladding simply means to layer material over a wall. There are several materials available that can be used to layer the walls, depending on the requirement; a Fibre cement sheet is one of the best. You get a wide variety to choose from to give a new look and feel to your walls such as bricks, stones, wood, marble, metal, etc. Most modern washrooms and bathrooms use wall claddings to create an exotic & spacious look - something which has limitations with tile.

Why should I go for Fibre cement cladding when I have other options?

While Fibre cement boards have always been the prime choice of architects for external wall cladding purposes, they are also a smart choice for interiors in areas that are prone to constant contact with moisture. As a back liner, a Fibre cement board provides a suitable base for laying ceramic tiles in wet areas. With a proper framed structure, EcoPro Fibre cement claddings can take the load of wall-mounted closets, washbasin, split air conditioner unit, etc. Listed below are some of the major advantages you get when choosing Fibre cement claddings

Saves Space:

Since Fibre cement cladding boards are thinner and more streamlined than traditional construction methods, the internal floor area can be utilized more judiciously leaving you more space for consumption.

Resistance to mold:

Fibre cement claddings are not only water-resistant but also resist the growth of molds. This also makes it less susceptible to slips and slides.

Durable:

Unlike tiles, Fibre cement claddings are strong and durable and do not crack easily.

Time-saving setup:

Since claddings come in prebuilt boards, setting up frames and installing the walls take far less time & effort than brick and mortar construction. Not to mention there is no need to strengthen the walls by watering them, again time saved!

Low maintenance:

Since Fibre cement does not retain dust and does not develop cracks, they are quick to clean and maintain. They will look as good in years to come as they do when they are first installed.

Maintains continuity with your house:

Running similar Claddings throughout the house can help maintain a seamless appearance in your entire house.

Environmentally safe:

Fibre cement is made up of a combination of cellulose Fibre, cement, sand, and water, as well as a small number of additives - all of which are recyclable and eco-friendly so you can stay guilt-free!

Even though It would be unfair to weigh Fibre cement boards on the same scale as other alternatives such as tiles or digital boards, it still stands a strong fight. If you are contemplating using wall claddings for your wet areas or external wall claddings for your property, contact EcoPro - the leading Fibre cement board manufacturer in India.

How to panel a wall: DIY wall paneling in 10 simple steps

Wall paneling adds a defining personality to your home & gives it a distinct character. Wall paneling has recently caught a lot of attention on social media with people sharing their transformed walls on various social media channels. Sound absorbing panels are especially popular with the youth as they help maintain their privacy.

It is available in different forms, so it's crucial to think it through & do your research before choosing the style you want to go with. Also, you need to decide in advance whether you want to go for Sound absorbing panels or regular ones. A wide range of moldings like grand period designs, tongue and groove, traditional shaker-style, Jacobean-style grid, or dado style are available to choose from.

TIP: Sound absorbing panels is the recommended type as they help drown out unwanted outside noise.

Let’s get started!

Step 1

Before starting anything, you’ll decide on the following things:

  • What thickness of Fibre Cement Boards you’re going to use. Fibre Cement Boards comes in varying depths i.e. 6, 9, 12, 18 & 25mm.
  • What width you’re going to cut your panels to.

Step 2

Make sure you have the following equipment with you.

- A tape measure

- Pieces of paper

- Pencil

- Spirit level

1. Start by measuring the width of your wall.

2. Work out the distance you’d like between each vertical panel which will determine how many panels you are going to need.

3. Times the number of panels you’d like by the width of a panel

4. Take the width of the wall and subtract the figure in step 3. This will leave you with the total sum you have to play with for the gaps between the panels.

5. Divide that figure by the number of gaps you’ll be left with.

6. Work out the height you’d like the panels to be.

7. Work out how many horizontal panels you are going to need to sit across the top of your vertical panels. Take your chosen height of panels and then work out how many you can fit across the width of your room.

Step 3

Now, it’s time to draw out the paneling on your wall. For this you’ll need a tape measure, a pencil and a spirit level. Please note that this step is important as it’ll highlight any wrong measurements you may have taken.

Step 4

Purchase your Fibre Cement Boards.

Step 5

Time to attach your panels to the wall. There are two ways of doing this.

Option 1

You could opt for the glue and nail gun option.

This option is by far the quickest & easiest but if you like to change the look & feel of your home regularly this option may in the long run cause you to need to re-plaster the wall behind the paneling as removing the glued down panels may bring the plaster off along with it.

Option 2

Screwing the panels to the wall. Now this option takes a lot longer but will save you money and time in the future.

Stage 1

Drill 3 holes in your panel top, middle and bottom. You may only need a screw at the top and bottom of the panel if your walls are straight.

Stage 2

Mark where the holes are on the wall with a pencil. (Start with the Vertical panels first).

Stage 3

Drill holes in the wall and insert wall plugs.

Stage 4

Next use a countersink drill bit to create a small cavity for the screw to sit flush in each drilled hole of the panel.

Stage 5

Screw the panel to the wall. Repeat for each panel

Stage 6

Caulk all the edges and fill all the holes with poly filler.

Stage 7

Once everything is dry, sand back the poly filler and repeat if needed.

Step 8

Time to prime!

Step 9

Time to paint. You’ll need 3 coats.

Step 10

You’re done! Enjoy your new wall!

Why & When To Use An Acoustic Panel - EcoPro

Why & When To Use An Acoustic Panel

Ever wondered why sound does not reverberate as much in places like restaurants, marriage halls, offices and theaters in spite of them being so crowded. Well, you can appreciate the acoustic panels who silently consume all the noise, saving your ears from the unwanted echoes and enabling you to have smooth communication. These sound absorbing panels are designed to absorb noise frequencies and clear the air from the various sound waves flying around in chaos. They are either mounted on walls, suspended or attached to the ceiling to reduce the sound levels. Apart from their utility value, they also add a great aesthetic touch to the interior spaces.

When the echo and sound resonance of a room is too strong, correcting the room acoustics can help. Sound echoes from smooth surfaces such as smooth walls, glass, metals, etc. It can also be due to a lack of furniture, curtains or carpets which help absorb the sound. It gets quite difficult to have a decent conversation in such a room without getting distracted by your own echoes. Apparently, it also leads to tiredness and lack of concentration for their occupants. If you are willing to add one to your own workspace or house, here is a list of situations in which acoustic panels could be used.

soundproof wall panels

When to use acoustic panels?

Soundproof wall panels can be used for drywall partition in offices or as a mezzanine flooring material to absorb sound. Any place, where there are much noise and sound reflection such as a marriage hall, theater screen, sound studio, office, and home.

Applications of an acoustic panel

Depending on how they are installed, acoustic panels can perform various roles:

  • To absorb sound
  • To reduce sound pollution
  • For acoustic correction

Materials Used

A sound wave travels in all direction and can spread out in an entire room reflecting on all elements. When a sound wave hits an object, part of it travels through it and the remaining is bounced off. The role of acoustic panels and acoustic elements is thus to increase the extent to which sound waves hitting them are absorbed.

Sound Absorbing Panels are typically made up of an absorbent foam for acoustic absorption and a colored or printed fabric cover to conceal the foam. These panels are not only used to cancel noise but also give better structure to spaces or simply decorate them. You can enhance the visual appearance of the room by adding customized and theme-based panels. You can choose a printed, single color or mottled finish which comes in various shapes and colors. You can add light or a frame to add more emphasis.

Non-applications of acoustic panels

Echoes and sound waves traveling from one room to another can be reduced using acoustic insulation. Insulation can be achieved by using solid boards at the time of constructing the building. Acoustic panels are not the right solution for insulating spaces that suffer from noise pollution originating from the outside.
